Kaia's 13 Month Update
Kaia is one year and one month today! I can't believe how quickly she is growing. Here are some updates from the past month.
Kaia continues to chatter away, and while she won't consistently say lots of words over and over, she does say quite a few. The most common ones are still: Mama; More; Baba/Dada; Bye-bye, Ay-A (Keila), and also now every time Kaia sees any animals that resembles a dog, she makes a barking noise at it. She also said 'Neow neow' this afternoon when looking at a cat picture.
Hand gestures are pretty common at the table, such as pointing at something we want (water) or shoving away food we don't enjoy or have had enough of. When Kaia is full, she takes a lot of pleasure in flinging bits of food as far as she can across the room. She also tried shoving food in her ears a few times, but thankfully that idea seems to have passed as quickly as it started. Shoving food in between her toes is still common, however.
Kaia has quite the adult palate already and refuses most plain baby food now. If it doesn't contain spice, she's not interested! She even ate a mild Japanese curry the other night, no problem. Tonight a vegetarian potato/carrot concoction in a garlicky tomato sauce went down quickly, along with some brown rice. So far there are no signs of food allergies, and peanut butter and almond milk have both been well-liked. Actually, peanut butter was pretty much love at first taste, in tune with the rest of the females in this family.
Despite wanting so much food, Kaia is still around the 30th percentile in terms of weight. She's hovering around 8.6 kilos at the moment. I still haven't measured her height lately, so no idea what percentile she is for that.
Kaia also still refuses to pull herself up to stand! If placed in the position, she will stand while supporting herself on the sofa or a table for minutes at a time, but she has no interest at all in getting herself there. She had a checkup today, and the doctor assured me that her hips and legs are fine, so apparently we just have a really unmotivated baby. Maybe she will decide to walk one day. Maybe.
Favorites lately include: a wooden shape sorter toy, where one must put different shaped and colored blocks into their respective holes; a baby book showing various baby pictures; an animal book; a puppy book that barks when a button is pushed (hence Kaia's barking at animals); and finally, opening the one kitchen cupboard that has yet to be baby-proofed. Kaia also enjoys climbing onto my lap for a cuddle when she's taking a play-time break.
Music and rhythms are a lot of fun for her right now, and she likes repeating what we say, even if she can only get the intonation correct. Recently she will point at objects and make it known that she wants us to tell her what they are. She's very curious and particularly likes clocks ('Gock').
Kaia has turned into quite the ham, and if she realizes she's done something to make us laugh, she will repeat said action over and over. And over. She's a very cheerful baby and almost always ready to smile....unless it's nap time, or you've taken away something from her, that is! Then beware the wrath of an angry baby.
Kaia's holding steady at 8 teeth so far, although sleep has been worse than usual the past week or so. Maybe another tooth will appear soon?
That's it until the 14 month mark!
